Continuing our collaboration with the Lamlash Street Garden Group and the Hayles TRA we are now planning to transform two underused courtyard sites in Elephant & Castle used mainly for fly-tipping and parking into a much needed neighbourhood hub and work spaces for the diverse local communities. The idea is to bring these former industrial yards embedded in this residential area back into production.
We will create a hub of new studios and workshops for artists, creatives, makers and menders, together with a new community building and café – a place for neighbours of all ages and abilities to meet, spend time together and engage in a program of activities and events. Opening up these yards will also create new vital public spaces that link to a locally-led network of gardens and pocket parks including Lamlash Street and the adjacent allotments.
In November 2016 the project team linked up with Artworks Elephant who provided space for a weekend exhibition to promote the garden, sell garden produce and discuss the proposed plans for Hayles Yard. A crowdfunding campaign started in June 2017 and successfully attracted pledges from the London Mayor, local businesses and many residents to resource a feasibility study that further explores the potential of Hayles Yard and Five’s Court.
